Big Tech wants to erase our state's AI protections
Amid growing backlash, Representative Lori Trahan is working on legislation that would allow federal law to override — or “preempt” — state-level AI regulations. This would freeze the safeguards Massachusetts and other states have fought hard to put in place.
A broad coalition of children’s safety advocates, unions, artists and creators, and civil society groups are calling on Rep. Trahan not to invalidate state AI guardrails. State lawmakers are speaking out, and over 4,000 voters have signed a petition calling on the Congresswoman not to ban state AI laws. Now we need you to raise your voice.
If this passes, tech companies would face little to no accountability for AI systems that harm children online, discriminate against workers, or deceive families. Federal preemption hands Big Tech a blank check.
I am writing to urge you to oppose any federal AI legislation that would freeze or override state AI safeguards.
Massachusetts has been a leader in advancing commonsense AI safeguards that protect kids, consumers, and our elections from real, documented harms. Federal preemption would wipe out that progress and give Big Tech a free pass from accountability.
Ongoing negotiations on an AI bill that freezes state laws risk undermining state leadership while handing a major win to powerful tech interests. I urge you to stand with Massachusetts voters, not tech billionaires.
I respectfully ask you to reject any legislation that preempts state AI laws.
